This heart I kept in a steel box
Convinced no one would come
Avoiding all but the slyest fox
Permitting entry unto none
Although I looked and often saw
Objectives of desire
I always spot that fatal flaw
Before they lit that fire
By pure chance I missed but one
Her stealth I did not see
A smile the warmth of morning sun
Awoke a spark in me
The heart I kept so locked away
Began to melt inside
Quite what I felt I could not say
Yet wasted time I chide
Headlong I rushed to win her heart
So awkwardly to court
With childlike need right from the start
Some sign from her I sought
A conquest true there was no doubt
And deep so set to fall
Deflected by another's rout
I missed this siren's call
I watched in shadow as she left
To gentle move away
Relocked the box of a heart bereft
Upon that rueful day
Yet still to think what might have been
I sent one rose today
With a card unsigned from one unseen
To mark a Valentine Day
And on my mat with morning post
Hid out amongst the bills
One card came signed I craved the most
A testament of two wills
The name it bore, a plighted troth
In confirmation true
Accepts the card and flower both
As a token of love due |
