What the Army is for

A few days ago she said her goodbyes
to friends and family stood along the dock.
Mum, full of dejection, tears in her eyes
Dad, standing so proud, solid as a rock.
But now she’s arrived in this sorry land
she sees death and destruction all around
her trusted weapon held tight in her hand
enemy up high and down on the ground.

Young girls of nineteen, sent off to the war
waiting to confront their own destiny
she’s told that it’s what the Army is for
fighting the faces she just cannot see.
Defying the bullets, the heartbreak and pain
just wanting to be with her family again.
