Young maiden's lament |
A pretty young maiden
So petite
And so fair
Went walking
All lonesome
To the local fair.
She was skipping
And singing
As she walked along
And all of Creation
Tuned in
To her lovely song.
She sang of her one love
So handsome
And tall,
Who had asked for her hand
At the last
Local Ball.
"We will marry in Springtime"
She sang
With a smile,
"And all our relations
Will dress up
In fine style!
I'll pledge him my troth
Under God's
Holy Law -
And 'till death do us part
We will live for
Each other!"
She was so busy singing
And dreaming
Her dream -
She never noticed a movement
In the grass
Oh so green!
Her tall handsome lover
Entwined with
Another -
And the girl he was courting
The wife of
Her brother!
Her singing continued
In the bright
Country air,
And was heard by her lover
As she skipped past
Them there!
But their sudden hushed movement
Made her glance
Their way
And "Oh how could you sweetheart?"
Was all
She could say!
Her heart stopped it's singing
As she ran from
That lane,
And that pretty young maiden
Was ne'er
Seen again!
They say if you listen
On a clear day
In Spring -
You can still hear that Maiden
As she does hauntingly
Sing:
"I'll pledge him my troth
Under God's
Holy Law -
And 'til death do us part
We will live
For each other!" |
