The forgotten Christmas

With military precision, we parade around the stores
Choosing little gift packs in twos and threes and fours!
We start hoarding little gift tags and loads of wrapping too
To ensure we've got the prefect gift to present to Aunty Pru.

When Christmas fever hits us, we try to pull out all the stops
And aim to be the first one to try and buy out all the shops!
We're buying up the sort of stuff we never bought before,
And then we hear from Uncle George and have to buy some more!

We head up to the attic and drag down the Christmas tree,
And when we see the state of it - we curse excessively -
Because this was more expense that we didn't want to spend
And although we do resent it - we buy a new one in the end!

We are forced to buy a turkey, stuffing, sprouts and ham
Then follow all the recipes passed down from dear old Gran!
We gorge on Christmas pudding, mince pies and rum sauce -
And for all of this indulgence, we'll have to pay of course!!

We remind the little children to hang their stockings on the wall
And warn "You must be really sleeping or Santa will not call!"
When finally all are settled and safely in their bed -
You might recall the story from the Bible that you read!

How a tiny little baby was born one Christmas Day
And the only place to comfort him was on a bed of hay.
Where Mary loved her only son as she rocked him to and fro
And cast her eyes to the twinkling stars and the crisp and even snow!

How did we lose the Message of what Christmas was about,
And take it's simple meaning and turn it inside out?
Nowdays it's common if we all end up in debt
And the reason how it started - all too easy to forget.

We only need a little gift to give and show we care
Just like the Kings who give the gold, the frankincense and myrrh.
It's important we remember with our cards and presents too
That tiny little baby who first brought the Word to you!
