I watched

I remember watching as you made up
Your 'rollie' from that little 'backy' tin!
I watched as you lifted out each paper
Then slowly rolled it nice and thin!
I watched as you carefully licked the edges
Of each piece of backy paper!
I watched as you adjusted each little ciggy
So the ends would gently taper!
I watched you light each little 'rollie'
To draw that substance in!
I watched you carry on your smoking
Even though you were retching and coughing!
I watched the Doctor tell you that
Your time was nearly up,
Then I watched you try and struggle
To even lift a tiny cup!
But what I remember most of all
Was watching your final breath -
That's when you finally realised
That old tobacco had lead up to your death!
I watched while you were being lowered
Into that cold wide-open grave
And I wonder why you never thought
Our lives were not good enough to save?
Today the Doctor told me that
While I watched as you inhaled
Every day MY lungs were suffering
So that now my life too it is curtailed!
You should have been leading by example
We all know that much is true,
Now because of 'passive' smoking -
I am dying too!
