Gilded cage

"Tell me that you'll marry me and you can live in a gilded cage
And I will love and honour you 'til we both reach an old age."
My heart it soared and I told him "Yes" with a teardrop in my eye,
And I promised to love and cherish him to the moment I would die.

We were lovers young and free with a whole life up ahead
And we kissed and swooned and believed each word that the other said!
We soon were wed and our life began as one great honeymoon
Filled with wine and roses and making love to our favourite tune!

Two little babes and a grand big house was the order of the day
Too busy in my gilded cage - I never saw him start to stray!
A message found in his overcoat awoke me with quite a start
And I wish I'd never read them now because they really broke my heart.

It read "You say she doesn't understand you dear, so come away with me
And together we will start a brand new life with only you and me.
If you slip away in the dead of night you can escape her rage
So we can llive together, as you promised, in a lovely gilded cage!"

In my middle years I was quite content to live here with my man
And to show him love and loyalty as only a woman can,
But a pretty wee lass in a tight short skirt lured my man away
And he broke the heart of this one true love the day he walked away!

Now all alone in this gilded cage my heart is wrecked with pain
Now that he's tasted forbidden fruit - I know he won't be back again.
He'll keep on finding pretty girls to stand in the centre of his stage
Where they'll sit upon a pedestal - in some other gilded cage!!
