Silently the snowflakes fell
On Boxing Day that year
All day long they swirled around
Wind whistling then I'd hear.
As we slept snug in our beds
The blizzard raged outside
Whipping snow drifts Oh so high
The roads and pavements hide.
Snows blanket covered everything
The still and eerie quiet
A light so bright it dazzled me
I couldn't quite believe it!
With gloves and scarves and Wellington boots
I ventured out to play
A garden full of pure white flakes
A snowman built that day.
The big freeze came unexpectedly
For adults problems posed
The children's winter dreams come true
The schools remained all closed.
Long days spent with friends outside
Toboggans made and raced
For some an old tin tray would do
Not knowing dangers faced.
To Cashes Park we made our way
A steep and bumpy hill
Up and down we raced all day
Excited by the thrill.
At end of day with rosy cheeks
And hands chilled to the bone
We vowed to meet again next day
Then hurried onwards home.
The thaw arrived to take the snow
The roads then reappeared
Time once more to go to school
I'm sure our parents cheered!
Fond memories of the winter of 1963 when
the snow stayed for so long
and all the pipes froze and water had to be brought around to our homes.
Exciting for the children but endless worries for the parents! |
